Understanding Bookkeeping Basics

Q&A's

Bookkeeping is the process of recording transactions in a consistent way, typically using accounting software such as QuickBooks. It is a key component to building a financially successful business.

A bookkeeper handles the recording and reconciliation of financial transactions, including purchases, receipts, sales, and payments. They manage your general ledger and ensure your books are accurate and up to date. They also can provide services such as accounts receivable and payable management, payroll processing services, and cashflow preparation.

Bookkeeping is the recording and reconciling of transactions and the foundation of the accounting process. Accounting is the overall management of the recorded financial information, which includes analyzing, interpreting, and reporting data.

Absolutely... otherwise, we'd be out of a job! Proper bookkeeping is crucial for small businesses to manage cash flow, secure loans, and prepare for tax time. If your goal is to grow, having accurate data to make financial decisions is key.

Start by setting up a system for tracking your financial transactions. This can be as simple as using a spreadsheet or as sophisticated as a dedicated accounting software such as QuickBooks. Consider consulting with a bookkeeper to setup your system correctly from the get-go. We offer a QuickBooks File Setup service to help you do just that. Starting off on the right foot can make all the difference in the long run!

Bookkeepers use various accounting software to manage records more efficiently. We are a QuickBooks specific firm, meaning we only work with QuickBooks products. If you are currently using something else and are open to change, no problem! We can help you convert from another system to a QuickBooks subscription that fits your needs.

Depending on the needs of your business, this can be anywhere from daily to monthly. While monthly works for the majority of small businesses, we can help guide you on what's right for you based on your business needs.

We combine powerful systems with real human connection.

Bookkeeping that’s both strategic and personal.

You’ll get a dedicated bookkeeper, layered reviews for accuracy, and financial reports that actually make sense.
Our team brings structure, clarity, and proactive communication—so you’re never left guessing about your numbers.

Choosing the Right Bookkeeping Support

Q&A's

Hiring a professional bookkeeper ensures financial accuracy especially when it comes to things like recording loans, sales tax, fixed asset purchases, and year-end tax adjustments. They also help with tax requirements and compliance, plus can provide valuable insights to help you make better business decisions. Remember, you did not start your business to be a bookkeeper (unless you're us).

Look for a bookkeeper with experience in your industry, who asks in depth questions about your business, and who has strong references. Ensure they understand your business goals, can communicate financial information clearly, and speak in terminology that you understand. Check out our blog post for more on this topic!

Ah, the million-dollar question! Costs vary depending on the complexity and volume of transactions, any additional services that are provided such as cashflow projections or payroll services, and the level of guidance you desire from your provider. That said, our average bookkeeping package is $1,250 per month, with some as low as $550 per month and others as high as $5,000 per month. If you decide to work with us, we will dig deep into your financial activity and business goals so that we can provide you with a custom quote based solely on your unique needs.

We’re bookkeepers—plain and simple—and that’s our primary service offering! That said, we do offer accounting-adjacent support like cash flow planning, budgeting, and sales tax filing.

We don’t prepare income tax returns, offer tax advice, or provide public accounting services. But we do work closely with your CPA or tax preparer to make sure everything is in order.

Just to be crystal clear:
👉We are not CPAs.
👉We do not prepare tax returns, compilations, reviews, audits, or provide management consulting as defined under public accounting.

Because of that, the services being offered do not require a state license.

Because we hands down have the best team with an extensive amount of experience helping business owners and key decision makers; in fact, some of us have even had our own businesses in another life, so we know what you’re going through firsthand. When you work with Accounting Therapy, you get real people that speak your language. Our goal is to meet you where you're at, give you the financial information you need, and educate you on any data points that may have you a bit lost in space.
